Brightkite iPhone interface is stunning

Thanks to a generous invitation from Zakk Forchilli, I am a brand new user of Brightkite, "a location based social network." As I'm not a heavy cell phone texter (yet), I'm not sure how much I'll be using the service, but as I familiarized myself with Brightkite's interface, I ran across their recently-released iPhone/iPod Touch interface.

Okay, this entry is more an honest question than substantive blog post. I log into any of the gazillion social networks I follow and I see a varying percentage of people I can say I truly know. Let's go through some of the networks I list on my Contact page: LiveJournal: I've actually met 100% of my LiveJournal friends. Facebook: around 98%. Flickr: exactly 31%. Twitter: probably around 5%. Pownce: maybe 1%. So here's my question. Practically speaking, should these numbers s

Last week the blogging buzz was all about FriendFeed, and it looks like it's continued into this week as well with Robert Scoble's recent post entitled "Why FriendFeed won't go mainstream." I'll sidestep the brewing Microsoft-Facebook-Yahoo! storm to briefly address one important-- and potentially deal-breaking-- aspect of FriendFeed and aggregation services like it. In his post, Scoble outlines nine reasons FriendFeed won't catch on, including some of the following: only early adopters

As commenters Wayne Smallman and Heidi Cool have noted here and here, social networks can quickly get out of hand if you track individuals that are too different, too random, or too noisy. However, reducing a list of over 800 people can be a pretty daunting process unless you utilize some rules of thumb to help you along the way. With this in mind, I present to you the first in a series of brief articles, each covering a sample heuristic you may wish to use to prune your social networks to a

Social media. Web 2.0. You know what these things are and you take advantage of them every day on the net. Whether you're socializing on Facebook, updating Twitter, or just adding a new bookmark to Ma.gnolia, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives. Last month, we reported the arrival of Facebook's version of a lifestream when they began offering you a way to import content from various online services into your Facebook Mini-Feed. At the time, the only services available were Flickr, Picasa, Yelp, and del.icio.us. (Digg was added later on). Today, a post on the Facebook blog announces that you can now import from several other services, including YouTube, StumbleUpon, Hulu, Pandora, Last.fm, and Google Reader.

By popular demand, I've been asked by other FriendFeed users to highlight how I use the popular social lifestreaming site. The first topic, covered how to best use the "Hide" function. Today, I wanted to introduce the underutilized, but quite versatile, bookmarklet. In addition to supporting the import of several dozen services into your feed, FriendFeed lets you post directly to the site in two ways. The first is the straight-forward "Share Something" link at the top of the page, begging for a q

Whenever a new product comes out that has the early adopter set all atwitter -- like say, Twitter, for example -- there is a certain amount of discussion devoted to when or if the product will go mainstream. Sometimes we're not even sure if a new web app or service maybe already has reached the masses. A lucky few new web apps will cross the proverbial chasm into the mainstream, but most won't. Some those that don't will nonetheless see their ideas co-opted by a site that is already undeniab
